Autumn Whispers Mixed Media Art Tutorial

Embrace the warmth of autumn in your art journal with this cozy fall-themed page! Using real leaves as stencils, we’ll create natural, textured impressions that capture the essence of fallen leaves. We’ll also layer elements in the background like drywall tape, ink, and paint to create a textured, golden art piece.

Prep your art journal page by taping off the edges with painter’s tape and applying a coat of White Gesso to the background.

Next, I’ll start adding color to my background in vertical and horizontal strokes – I’m using Titan Buff, Cobalt Teal Hue, Quin Gold, and Extreme Sheen: 24K Gold. Dry with a heat tool.

Next, I’ll add circles and leaves to my background using stencils, a stencil brush, and colored ink pads mixed with acrylic paint. For extra texture, I’ll apply pieces of drywall tape with DecoArt Matte Medium. Finally, I’ll dry the layers using a heat tool.

Next, I’ll use real leaves from my yard as stencils. Place a leaf where you’d like it on your artwork, then use a stencil brush to apply ink around the edges to capture the shape on your paper. Repeat with as many leaves as you’d like.

Afterward, I’ll add color to each leaf with ink, then outline and detail each leaf using a liner brush and black acrylic paint for stems and veins. A permanent pen or Sharpie marker also works well for these details.

Next I’ll use a stencil brush to apply White Gesso around the edges of my page and then dry it with a heat tool. I’ll layer Quin Gold and Metallic Gold paints around the edges for added warmth. I’ll paint a leaf in Quin Gold, let it dry, then add detail lines with black paint.

For a splatter effect, dip a fan brush in watered-down black acrylic paint and tap it over the page. Using a dry brush, I’ll add Prussian Blue Hue to the edges for depth. I’ll also paint a few hearts in Pyrolle Red. Finally, I’ll seal the page with Duraclear Satin Sealer, dry with a heat tool, and carefully remove the painter’s tape.
